During the classical period of Mayan civilization, from the 2nd to the 10th century, Chichen Itza was the largest and most prosperous city. The name Chichen Itza translates from ancient Mayan as "at the mouth of the well of the Itza," and its mysterious ancient Mayan culture and city ruins led to its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.

You will explore the most famous pyramid, the Feathered Serpent Pyramid, also known as El Castillo or Kukulkan Pyramid. It showcases various architectural styles from different periods of Mayan and Toltec influences. The pyramid is a marvel of precise geometric calculations, consisting of 91 steps on each of its four sides, with an additional square platform at the top, totaling 365 steps—symbolizing the days in a solar year. A fascinating phenomenon occurs during the spring equinox (March 21) and fall equinox (September 21) when sunlight creates a shadow resembling a serpent slithering down the pyramid's steps until it converges with the serpent's head at the base—a spectacle believed by the Mayans to represent the descent of the Feathered Serpent God.
