Sky City - Machu Picchu

(UNESCO 1983 Cultural + Natural)

"Machu Picchu" means "Old Peak" in the Inca language. It is located on a high mountain 112 kilometers northwest of the ancient Inca Empire's capital, Cusco, and was built in the early 15th century. The ancient city is situated at an altitude of 2400 meters, with cliffs on both sides. Due to its sacred, mysterious, and devout atmosphere, Machu Picchu was designated a dual UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 for both its natural and cultural significance. In 2007, it was also recognized as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, earning the titles of the "Lost City" and the "Sky Garden."

In 1911, American explorer Hiram Bingham discovered the ancient city ruins completely concealed beneath thick tropical forests. Since then, as the veil of mystery gradually lifted, Machu Picchu began to reveal its glorious and advanced imperial civilization to the modern world. While only remnants and ruins remain, the spectacular appearance of its heyday is still discernible. The entire site consists of around a hundred buildings, with narrow and orderly ancient city streets. Palaces, temples, fortresses, graveyards, terraces, and a complete irrigation system each have their unique characteristics. Constructed predominantly with massive stones, without the use of any mortar, even a blade cannot fit between the stones. The extraordinary craftsmanship from this ancient era is truly remarkable.

However, despite Machu Picchu's prominence in archaeology, its history and understanding remain sparse, contributing to its mysterious allure. In Inca culture, there were no written records, and history relied solely on unique knot patterns for record-keeping and oral traditions. It is like a complete labyrinth, appearing suddenly on Earth in an age without iron tools, without cattle or horses, and without knowledge of wheels.

Its true history, purpose, and why people abandoned the city still lack a conclusive answer, leading to theories of extraterrestrial involvement gaining popularity.

The salt flats are composed of over 3000 individual salt ponds, each measuring 5 square meters, situated on the slope of the Qaqawiñay Mountain. From this vantage point, you can overlook the salt flats, where sunlight bathes the expansive, snow-white terrain, creating a sparkling and radiant spectacle. The contrast with the reddish-brown soil, yellow rocks, and verdant mountains enhances the richness of the various colors in the landscape.

First discovered in 1932, experts believe that these terraces served as an experimental farm created by the ancient Inca Empire. The purpose was to simulate various climates and cultivate a variety of vegetables and fruits. The temperature increases as you move lower in the terraces and decreases as you ascend. Through this ingenious system, the Inca people gained insights into which crops were suitable for cultivation at different altitudes. This ancient agricultural site, developed hundreds of years ago, made significant contributions to the agricultural advancements of the empire.

Upon arrival in Cusco, you will embark on a tour of the city's most famous landmarks, including the "Temple of the Sun," which was originally constructed with walls made of two-kilogram gold plates, totaling seven hundred in number. After a journey of about an hour and a half, you will arrive at Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, often referred to as the "Sky City" or the "Lost City" of the ancient Inca Empire, for a day of exploration.

【Machu Picchu】The name Machu Picchu in the Inca language means "Old Peak." This mountain city, situated at an altitude of 2400 meters, was built in the 15th century atop steep cliffs amidst towering mountains. The ancient city is divided into several areas, featuring temples, residential zones, burial grounds, palaces, terraced gardens, and other intricate stone structures that showcase the grandeur of the Inca Empire. Discovered by an American archaeologist on July 24, 1911, the mysterious mountain city remains shrouded in mystery regarding the transportation of massive stones to such heights, the purpose of its construction, and why it was eventually abandoned. Recognized as a masterpiece of construction, Machu Picchu was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.

Tonight, you will stay in the mountain town of Aguas Calientes, immersed in Inca ambiance. After enjoying dinner at the hotel, you can explore the ancient market in the town and purchase some locally crafted souvenirs.

DAY 5
Machu Picchu ➜ Ollantaytambo ➜ Maras Salt Mines ➜ Moray Circular Terraces ➜ Cusco

After breakfast today, we will take a tourist train back to Ollantaytambo, making special stops at two major attractions in the Andes Mountains of Peru: the Maras Salt Mines and the Moray Circular Terraces.

Maras Salt Mines (Maras): The Maras Salt Mines consist of over 3,000 salt pools, each measuring 5 square meters. Located on the slope of the Qaqawiñay mountain, Maras offers a panoramic view of the salt mines. When sunlight bathes the extensive white salt fields, they sparkle brilliantly against the backdrop of reddish-brown soil, yellow stones, and lush green mountains, creating a vibrant tapestry of colors.

Moray Circular Terraces (Moray): About 7 kilometers from the salt mines, we find the Moray Circular Terraces, resembling a theater-like structure. Discovered in 1932, experts believe these terraces served as an experimental agricultural site created by the ancient Inca Empire. The purpose was to simulate different climates and cultivate a variety of fruits and vegetables. The terraces at lower levels have higher temperatures, while those at higher levels have lower temperatures. This ingenious system allowed the Incas to understand the optimal altitudes for growing different crops, contributing significantly to the agricultural development of the empire.
